General description
The wind and precipitation data include not only the severe wind and precipitation caused by tropical cyclones, but also that caused by the interaction between tropical cyclones and other weather systems. In particular, the following rules are used to determine the wind and precipitation associated with TCs:
- When a TC interacts with an adjacent frontal system, the wind and precipitation on the warm air mass side are defined as TC-associated.
- When the inverted trough of a TC interacts with a midlatitude trough, the dramatically enhanced rainfall present before the trough (the ‘remote TC torrential rain’ of Chen and Ding, 1979, and Chen et al., 2010) is defined as TC-associated.
- When a TC interacts with the southwestern vortex (Kuo et al., 1986; Lu, 1986; Wang and Orlanski, 1987), the precipitation within the vortex circulation should be excluded from TC-associated precipitation, as the vortex itself is a rainy system.
- When a TC moves into midlatitudes with a circulation absent at the surface but clear at 850–700 hPa, its precipitation is also defined as TC-associated.
