The Western North Pacific Tropical Cyclone Data Exploration System

The Western North Pacific Tropical Cyclone Data Exploration System was sponsored by the China Meteorological Administration and has been designed and developed by the Shanghai Typhoon Institute (STI) since 2001. This system is intended to support either operational or research work. In 2012, the STI released the current (third) version of the system, which is web- and GIS-based, and that users can access via the Internet. Compared with earlier versions, the current version contains more basic data including tropical cyclone data, satellite imagery, topography, remote sensing imagery, and so on. The system allows these data sources to be accessed and merged in a number of ways to meet user requirements. The main functions of the system include searching the basic tropical cyclone information and its impacts (wind and precipitation), searching for similar tropical cyclones, climatological statistics, data visualization, zoom in and zoom out, adding labels, output, and so on.
